Young children, ranging from 5 years old to 8 years old have difficulty understanding, expressing and regulating emotions; however through play therapy they are able to process and work through these emotions and explore ways to regulate them in a concrete and fun manner. Older children ranging from 9 years and 12 years mainly a combination of talk and play therapy is used. With older children and/ adolescents I do talk therapy that is very similar to adult individual psychotherapy but working with the child’s cognitive developmental age in mind and using games and behavioural exercises in order to assist with coping strategies, emotional expression, problem solving and self esteem.
When working with couples and help to identify understand the couples’ goals, needs and wants to direct therapy, I assist the couples to identify areas in their relationships that need to be addressed while exploring significant patterns and each individual’s contribution to the different areas of the relationship.
I also assist couples explore significant experiences in each individual’s personal history which may be influencing their behaviour in the current relationships
I do both short term solution focused psychotherapy and longer term therapy. I use and integrative approach, focusing on themes of an individual’s significant past experiences and early relationships which may have birthed significant core beliefs and coping behaviours. I use elements of person centred and cognitive behavioural therapy and psychodynamic approach especially with longer term psychotherapy.
In family therapy I work with the whole family in each session, identifying and exploring how the family system works, what role each interdependent individual plays in the family system, and the areas of the family system that need to be addressed and the behaviours that perpetuate these areas.
